THE YEAR OF THE OX

New Year is just around the corner….I could hear the sounds of firecrackers once in a while. But unlike the New Year celebrations of the past, there is a noted decline in the fireworks display which really is an indication that the economic crisis is indeed upon us. Not to mention the havoc wrought by Typhoon Frank last June which affected almost all businesses and families in Aklan especially Kalibo.

This would perhaps be a very opportune time for everyone to focus on the basics…aside from the basic necessities such as food, shelter and clothing...but the basic reason of our celebrations. Perhaps we have been too wrapped up in the rush of the season and the commercialism of the times that we have forgotten the basic and true meaning of our celebration. The coming New Year for me is a time to reflect on the things that I have done, have failed to do and a time to thank God for all the blessings, trials and challenges that He has given me. This is a time for me to plan for the coming year….

According to the Chinese calendar, 2009 is the Year of the Ox and like everybody else, I am hopeful that the coming year would bring better luck. Chinese astrology predicts that the Year of the Ox is a conservative year, one of traditions and values. It is a slow and steady year which will bring about stability and growth brought about by diligence and patience. It is a Year of Harvest – where we reap what we have sown. This is a time to take care of business.

I am not a staunch believer of astrology but as I always say, there is no harm in knowing. However, I firmly believe that hard work still pays off and that all things happen according to God's will. I always believe that there is no such thing as coincidence in this world…..that there is a greater power that controls all things in this universe.

All things considered, I would like to believe that the New Year will be a better one because with all the troubles and trials that I have been through in the last year, there is no other way but up…..

So I look forward to the New Year with joyful anticipation sans the expensive fireworks display and lavish parties but with a fervent prayer….
